!--paging_filter--pAlison Garrett of Valle Crucis, North Carolina, knows that Valentinersquo;s Day isnrsquo;t just about sending flowers to or going out to dinner with your husband, boyfriend or significant other. For several years now shersquo;s been using Valentinersquo;s Day as an opportunity to remind other people in her life that she loves them.nbsp; /p
pldquo; We get suckered into the commercialized holiday.rdquo; Garrett said. ldquo; We shouldnrsquo;t, but we do. We need to remember what is at the heart of all thismdash;and that is love.rdquo;/p

People are surprised when they learn I have my own cookie business, with my own name on the packages and a contract with a bakery.
After all, I’m only 16 years old and still in high school. I never set out to go into business. What I really wanted to do was help the homeless.
But as I look back on it now, I see that something much bigger was happening.
I came home from school one afternoon to find my mother reading an announcement in our temple bulletin. A homeless shelter in nearby Bridgeport was asking for food donations.

Just after relocating to a new town, my father was let go from his job as a welder.
Dad diligently searched for work, and Mom tried to scrape together meals for my brother, sister and me.
Soon my parents had spent all their savings. When things got desperate, a nearby farmer offered us potatoes from his field. We ate potatoes three times a day: fried for breakfast, baked for lunch and mashed for dinner.
Several weeks passed and Dad was still unemployed. Mealtimes grew quiet and morose.

Accompanied by my four-year-old son, Eric, I was on my way to the store to buy a pack of cigarettes.
I knew I shouldn’t be doing this. I was going through a rough time financially and could barely make ends meet, especially for bad habits such as cigarette smoking.
Still, I’d been a smoker for 13 years and could not stop.
As I drove into the store’s parking lot, on impulse I turned to my son and blurted out, "Oh, Eric, do something to make me quit smoking!"

!–paging_filter–pWhen you’re 94 years old and living in a retirement home where everything is done for you, there is a lot of time for you to wonder what you’re going to do with all that time. One thing I do is read GUIDEPOSTS. And it usually gets me thinking about all the miracles I’ve seen in my life, the little ones as well as the big. So here’s one that happened to me a few years back, and it taught me never to be afraid to ask God for what we need./p

!--paging_filter--pIt was a September evening in 1964, only hours after my husband Warren's funeral./p
pWhen the children went to bed, I sat in the tall fireside chair that had at one time graced the parlor of my mother's childhood home. I had to be alone. I was beyond tears./p
pemThis is the rest of my life,/em I thought. I knew how much the children would miss Warr. My heart ached for them. I knew about all the birthdays and holidays and graduations when they'd see other kids celebrating with their fathers. I knew because I'd been there./p

!--paging_filter--pMy favorite films always used to be about flying, movies like emTop Gun/emnbsp;and emThe Right Stuff/em. That's because I planned to be a military pilot like my father and then someday an astronaut./p
pThe posters on my bedroom walls showed F-4s, the space shuttle and Han Solo's Millennium Falcon from the emStar Wars/em movies. All that changed onenbsp;afternoon whenmdash;as a 13-year-old boymdash;I foundnbsp;my mother chuckling over a movie on TV called emA Christmas Story/em. quot;Come watch this with me,quot; she said.nbsp;/p

!–paging_filter–pMy name is Nicholas Rider. I’m 14 and last year I published my first book. How’s that? you ask. Well, it started with my grandfather./p
pGrandpa was a veteran of World War II, and maybe because I loved building model airplanes, I always used to ask him about what he’d done in the war. He was pretty modest about it. quot; Not a whole lot, quot; he said. /p

!--paging_filter--pAs a little girl I dreamed of growing up and living in a house just like the one my uncle owned: a huge Victorian with creaky floors and glass doorknobs where our whole family could gather on holidaysmdash;a real home. /p
pNow my husband, Larry, and I were finally going to buy our first house: a small bungalow that at least had space for a proper dining-room table. It wasn't exactly our dream home; it was a compromise based on our budget. /p
pWe were settling for something cute and comfortable that would be all ours: the perfect starter house.nbsp;/p
