Words for the New Year

Gazing at my haggard visage in the bedroom mirror that morning in 1991, I didn’t know which was worse—the way I felt or the way I looked.
In a sense they were one and the same, each a reflection of the other. I had just undergone a punishing round of chemotherapy following a double mastectomy for breast cancer, and doctors had warned me that I would probably have to undergo a second round.
I looked decades older than my 33 years. My skin sagged and my face was ashen. Dark circles shadowed my sunken eyes.

It’s Up to You
Wednesday, October 29th, 2008Lots of us have been there. Stuck in a job that gets us down. You know the feeling. You dread Mondays. You watch the clock, praying for the workday to be over. This can be a recipe for misery. On average, Americans spend 80 percent of their waking hours at work. That's way too much time to be unhappy. Every job has its challenges. Everyone has bad days at work. But if you find yourself screaming, "I hate this job!" once too often, it's time to change your life a little—or a lot.
The Truth Behind My Career
Friday, October 24th, 2008I was kneeling in the on-deck circle at Chicago's Wrigley Field that sweltering August afternoon. It was the bottom of the ninth. The Cubs trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-0, but we had a pair of runners on base and slugger Billy Williams at the plate.
It was the kind of situation Billy loved, and he was determined to come through. In the stands, 20,000 fans screamed for a hit. Me, I was silently praying that he would make an out so I wouldn't have to bat.
Soldier of the Year
Friday, August 1st, 2008It had been dark for days when I finally heard the doctor's voice. "Lieutenant Smiley?"
I knew from his tone that the news wasn't good. How could it be? I was lying in a bed in Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I had memories of an explosion in Mosul, in northern Iraq—a car driving toward my armored combat vehicle, me waving it back, shouting. Then hot, white light and loud noise. Then nothing.
Hooked
Tuesday, July 1st, 2008!–paging_filter–pWhen you’re 94 years old and living in a retirement home where everything is done for you, there is a lot of time for you to wonder what you’re going to do with all that time. One thing I do is read GUIDEPOSTS. And it usually gets me thinking about all the miracles I’ve seen in my life, the little ones as well as the big. So here’s one that happened to me a few years back, and it taught me never to be afraid to ask God for what we need./p

Thursday, November 1st, 2007!–paging_filter–pI’m a researcher. As a professor of bioethics at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine, I deal in facts. I’m also a father and a husbandmdash;a man blessed with a rich family life. Like many researchers, I’ve always felt that my clinical and my personal life were two different things. Two different worlds, really./p

October 2009: To recognize National Breast Cancer Month, some NFL players, including Brett Favre, will be wearing pink cleats.
Throughout October, you’ll also see coaches and referees wearing pink game apparel, as well as on-field pink ribbon stencils. All the items will be auctioned off at NFL.com and proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and team charities.

The Making of a Caregiver
Thursday, February 1st, 2007
My days in retirement had started to blur together. Oh, they were pleasant enough-summer days spent lolling away up at our lake house, puttering on the boat, visiting with our kids and grandkids. But lately I’d felt this grinding sameness. I was growing bored. And to think I’d looked forward to retirement.
