It’s Up to You

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Lots of us have been there. Stuck in a job that gets us down. You know the feeling. You dread Mondays. You watch the clock, praying for the workday to be over. This can be a recipe for misery. On average, Americans spend 80 percent of their waking hours at work. That's way too much time to be unhappy. Every job has its challenges. Everyone has bad days at work. But if you find yourself screaming, "I hate this job!" once too often, it's time to change your life a little—or a lot.

The Truth Behind My Career

Friday, October 24th, 2008

I was kneeling in the on-deck circle at Chicago's Wrigley Field that sweltering August afternoon. It was the bottom of the ninth. The Cubs trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-0, but we had a pair of runners on base and slugger Billy Williams at the plate.

It was the kind of situation Billy loved, and he was determined to come through. In the stands, 20,000 fans screamed for a hit. Me, I was silently praying that he would make an out so I wouldn't have to bat.

My Winning Strategy

Coach, the kids call me. For me, the most important meaning of the word goes all the way back to the 1500s, when a coach was a horse-drawn carriage with a specific purpose: to transport a person of importance from where he was to where he wanted to be or needed to be going.

Born on Christmas Eve

Saturday, December 1st, 2007
!--paging_filter--pIt was a September evening in 1964, only hours after my husband Warren's funeral./p pWhen the children went to bed, I sat in the tall fireside chair that had at one time graced the parlor of my mother's childhood home. I had to be alone. I was beyond tears./p pemThis is the rest of my life,/em I thought. I knew how much the children would miss Warr. My heart ached for them. I knew about all the birthdays and holidays and graduations when they'd see other kids celebrating with their fathers. I knew because I'd been there./p pa href=http://www.guideposts.com/story/mary-higgins-clark-kitchen-privileges-memoirread more/a/p

The Santa Story

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

!–paging_filter–pIt’s amazing to think I’ve been doing my Santa work for more than a decade now. No, I don’t make toys way up at the North Pole. I’m a different kind of helper: his ghostwriter./p
pOur quot;partnershipquot; began many Decembers ago. I’d been asked by the editor of the newspaper where I worked to write an article about Christmas traditions and Christmas history./p

Hello, My Name Is…

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Everyone who sees Scott Ginsberg knows who he is right away. And it’s not because he’s famous for anything. It’s because he wears a nametag. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

On his way out of an event in college, Scott noticed a trashcan full of discarded name-tags. "I thought, What would happen if I left mine on all day?" He got his answer quickly. The simple act of putting his name out in the open "inspired these great conversations, and I started meeting all these new people," he says.

Pink Is for Hope

Monday, October 1st, 2007

!–paging_filter–pTibetan bells chime softly as I open a door wreathed in pink roses. Pink letters spell out a welcome signmdash;Lovely Lady./p
pSoon I’ll be greeted by some very special women. quot;My ladies, quot; I call them. They mean the world to me. So does this shop. Yet if I had my druthers, I would close it down tomorrow, after nearly 30 years. Let me explain./p
pI was a young nursing student in California, full of idealistic dreams back in 1976. I didn’t know where life would take me, but like many students, I felt a desire to make a difference./p
