One Woman’s 2,000-mile Vespa Ride for Cystic Fibrosis

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Emily Schaller was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was only 18 months old, and her parents were informed she would probably not live through her teenage years.

However, the young woman, now 27 years old, does not let this diagnosis stop her from living life to its fullest, as well as devoting significant time and effort to the goal of finding a cure for the disease.

Schaller’s latest project involves an awareness-raising Vespa ride spanning 2,000 miles from Chicago to Burbank, California.

Body and Mind

Monday, January 26th, 2009
!--paging_filter--pDavid Hebert, a 16-year-old junior varsity quarterback from Houston, Texas, lay in a hospital room last fall, eagerly awaiting a visit from Kevin Everett, his football hero. Hebert had snapped his neck trying to make a tackle, paralyzing him from the waist down. When Everett, a 6-foot-4 former Buffalo Bills tight end, who lives in nearby Humble, strode through his doorway, Hebert was almost lost for words. ldquo;I want to become like you one day, rdquo; he said./p pa href=http://www.guideposts.com/story/kevin-everett-spinal-injuryread more/a/p

The Power of Hope

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Gazing at my haggard visage in the bedroom mirror that morning in 1991, I didn’t know which was worse—the way I felt or the way I looked.

In a sense they were one and the same, each a reflection of the other. I had just undergone a punishing round of chemotherapy following a double mastectomy for breast cancer, and doctors had warned me that I would probably have to undergo a second round.

I looked decades older than my 33 years. My skin sagged and my face was ashen. Dark circles shadowed my sunken eyes.

Kicked the Habit

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Accompanied by my four-year-old son, Eric, I was on my way to the store to buy a pack of cigarettes.

I knew I shouldn’t be doing this. I was going through a rough time financially and could barely make ends meet, especially for bad habits such as cigarette smoking.

Still, I’d been a smoker for 13 years and could not stop.

As I drove into the store’s parking lot, on impulse I turned to my son and blurted out, "Oh, Eric, do something to make me quit smoking!"

A Perfect Match

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

I put up my new 1994 calendar in the kitchen, feeling like I'd finally gotten my life back on track. The past year since my divorce had been a long, hard struggle, but my three boys and I had adjusted to our single-mom household.

My job at a furniture factory kept food on the table and paid the bills. And I'd started going to church again with my mom. I couldn't quite believe as she did that God had a deep, personal interest in our lives—I figured he had more important things to worry about than me—but I definitely found comfort in being closer to him.

The Truth Behind My Career

Friday, October 24th, 2008

I was kneeling in the on-deck circle at Chicago's Wrigley Field that sweltering August afternoon. It was the bottom of the ninth. The Cubs trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-0, but we had a pair of runners on base and slugger Billy Williams at the plate.

It was the kind of situation Billy loved, and he was determined to come through. In the stands, 20,000 fans screamed for a hit. Me, I was silently praying that he would make an out so I wouldn't have to bat.

Pink Is for Hope
