One Bird at a Time

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

I gazed at the blank paper on my easel, listening to the birds outside my window.

Sometimes it was that moment just before I put brush to canvas that was hardest. Besides, this was an important painting, a gift for people who had helped me through one of the toughest times in my life. It had to be exactly right to show them how I felt.

I’d been diagnosed with breast cancer a few months before and it changed my whole life. There was so much to go through: consultations, surgery, radiation.

Grandma Geronimo

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

I was waiting at a stoplight when it happened. Through the windshield I saw a small plane against the blue sky and then something fall from it. It was a man! He was a sky diver. My grandson, Clyde Lee, a parachutist in the military, had told me about such things. I held my breath until the sky diver’s parachute puffed out and he floated down beyond the tree line.

A car honking behind me broke the spell. The light was green and I had to move on, but at that moment I knew what I wanted to do: parachute from a plane!

Soldier of the Year

Friday, August 1st, 2008

It had been dark for days when I finally heard the doctor's voice. "Lieutenant Smiley?"

I knew from his tone that the news wasn't good. How could it be? I was lying in a bed in Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I had memories of an explosion in Mosul, in northern Iraq—a car driving toward my armored combat vehicle, me waving it back, shouting. Then hot, white light and loud noise. Then nothing.

The Closing

Thursday, November 1st, 2007
!--paging_filter--pAs a little girl I dreamed of growing up and living in a house just like the one my uncle owned: a huge Victorian with creaky floors and glass doorknobs where our whole family could gather on holidaysmdash;a real home. /p pNow my husband, Larry, and I were finally going to buy our first house: a small bungalow that at least had space for a proper dining-room table. It wasn't exactly our dream home; it was a compromise based on our budget. /p pWe were settling for something cute and comfortable that would be all ours: the perfect starter house.nbsp;/p pa href=http://www.guideposts.com/story/mysterious-ways-house-closingread more/a/p
