Kicked the Habit

Accompanied by my four-year-old son, Eric, I was on my way to the store to buy a pack of cigarettes.

I knew I shouldn’t be doing this. I was going through a rough time financially and could barely make ends meet, especially for bad habits such as cigarette smoking.

Still, I’d been a smoker for 13 years and could not stop.

As I drove into the store’s parking lot, on impulse I turned to my son and blurted out, "Oh, Eric, do something to make me quit smoking!"

Bead by Bead

One of my favorite gifts to give is a beaded angel pin made in South Africa by Zulu tribespeople. There’s a story behind these colorful pins. 

Jeremy Sutton ran a business that brought traditional Zulu handcrafts to a worldwide market. On a trip to purchase the crafts in the remote Kwa-Zulu Natal region, he was robbed and killed. His family understood that extreme poverty was partly to blame for his tragic death.

The Making of a Caregiver

My days in retirement had started to blur together. Oh, they were pleasant enough-summer days spent lolling away up at our lake house, puttering on the boat, visiting with our kids and grandkids. But lately I’d felt this grinding sameness. I was growing bored. And to think I’d looked forward to retirement.
