Hebert had snapped his neck trying to make a tackle, paralyzing him from the waist down. When Everett, a 6-foot-4 former Buffalo Bills tight end, who lives in nearby Humble, strode through his doorway, Hebert was almost lost for words. ldquo;I want to become like you one day, rdquo; he said./p pa href=http://www.guideposts.com/story/kevin-everett-spinal-injuryread more/a/p

Her Biggest Assignment

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

The newsroom phones were ringing, the news wire clattering, keyboards clicking, reporters and editors yammering—it all made my heart race. I was a reporter for the Wheeling News-Register in Wheeling, W. Va. My beat covered anything from fires and break-ins to local politics. Plus the occasional "soft" human-interest story.

A Perfect Match

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

I put up my new 1994 calendar in the kitchen, feeling like I'd finally gotten my life back on track. The past year since my divorce had been a long, hard struggle, but my three boys and I had adjusted to our single-mom household.

My job at a furniture factory kept food on the table and paid the bills. And I'd started going to church again with my mom. I couldn't quite believe as she did that God had a deep, personal interest in our lives—I figured he had more important things to worry about than me—but I definitely found comfort in being closer to him.

The Truth Behind My Career

Friday, October 24th, 2008

I was kneeling in the on-deck circle at Chicago's Wrigley Field that sweltering August afternoon. It was the bottom of the ninth. The Cubs trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-0, but we had a pair of runners on base and slugger Billy Williams at the plate.

It was the kind of situation Billy loved, and he was determined to come through. In the stands, 20,000 fans screamed for a hit. Me, I was silently praying that he would make an out so I wouldn't have to bat.

Soldier of the Year

Friday, August 1st, 2008

It had been dark for days when I finally heard the doctor's voice. "Lieutenant Smiley?"

I knew from his tone that the news wasn't good. How could it be? I was lying in a bed in Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I had memories of an explosion in Mosul, in northern Iraq—a car driving toward my armored combat vehicle, me waving it back, shouting. Then hot, white light and loud noise. Then nothing.

Another Chance

Of the more than 400,000 organ transplants performed in the U.S. in the last 20 years, roughly 20 percent have come from living donors, the vast majority of whom are blood relatives, spouses or close friends. It’s rare for a person to make a living organ donation to a total stranger. Not surprising when you consider the surgical risks and potential long-term complications.

Perfect Friends

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

When I was a news anchor for NBC in Miami several years ago, I was sent out to cover a story on the nonprofit volunteer organization called Best Buddies. I didn't know what the organization was and so I decided to do some research.

The Making of a Caregiver

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

My days in retirement had started to blur together. Oh, they were pleasant enough-summer days spent lolling away up at our lake house, puttering on the boat, visiting with our kids and grandkids. But lately I’d felt this grinding sameness. I was growing bored. And to think I’d looked forward to retirement.
