Grandma Geronimo

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

I was waiting at a stoplight when it happened. Through the windshield I saw a small plane against the blue sky and then something fall from it. It was a man! He was a sky diver. My grandson, Clyde Lee, a parachutist in the military, had told me about such things. I held my breath until the sky diver’s parachute puffed out and he floated down beyond the tree line.

A car honking behind me broke the spell. The light was green and I had to move on, but at that moment I knew what I wanted to do: parachute from a plane!

The Magic of Three Days

Monday, November 24th, 2008

It was a beautiful spring day, and a sense of peace stayed with me as I left the cathedral on Easter Monday morning.

I paused for a moment on top of the steps leading to the avenue, now crowded with people rushing to their jobs.

Sitting in her usual place inside a small archway was the old flower lady. At her feet corsages and boutonnieres were parading on top of a spread-open newspaper.

The flower lady was smiling, her wrinkled old face alive with some inner joy. I started down the stairs—then, on an impulse, turned and picked out a flower.

Kicked the Habit

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Accompanied by my four-year-old son, Eric, I was on my way to the store to buy a pack of cigarettes.

I knew I shouldn’t be doing this. I was going through a rough time financially and could barely make ends meet, especially for bad habits such as cigarette smoking.

Still, I’d been a smoker for 13 years and could not stop.

As I drove into the store’s parking lot, on impulse I turned to my son and blurted out, "Oh, Eric, do something to make me quit smoking!"

Soldier of the Year

Friday, August 1st, 2008

It had been dark for days when I finally heard the doctor's voice. "Lieutenant Smiley?"

I knew from his tone that the news wasn't good. How could it be? I was lying in a bed in Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I had memories of an explosion in Mosul, in northern Iraq—a car driving toward my armored combat vehicle, me waving it back, shouting. Then hot, white light and loud noise. Then nothing.

October 2009: To recognize National Breast Cancer Month, some NFL players, including Brett Favre, will be wearing pink cleats.

Throughout October, you’ll also see coaches and referees wearing pink game apparel, as well as on-field pink ribbon stencils. All the items will be auctioned off at NFL.com and proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and team charities.

Annie’s Soldier

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

"Mom!" my 10-year-old daughter, Annie, shouted as she burst through the front door after school that fall afternoon nearly three years ago. "I just got a letter from a soldier!"

Annie's teacher had given them a project: Write a letter to a U.S. serviceman or woman in Iraq. Annie had worked hard on a big picture of a red, white and blue cat. On the bottom of the page she'd written, "Be safe, and thank you."

I'd cautioned Annie not to get her hopes up too much.

Open Arms

9/6, 10:00 A.M.
A gorgeous September morning in our suburban Atlanta neighborhood. At breakfast with my husband, Bob, I glance at the Hurricane Katrina headlines.

A haunting photo of a woman struggling through waist-high water with a child no more than two at her hip stares out at me. Who is she?

I go for my morning walk, that mother and child in my mind’s eye as I imagine the thousands of other mothers and children just like them in Louisiana, or camped out at Houston’s Astrodome.
