The Power of Hope
Saturday, December 6th, 2008
Gazing at my haggard visage in the bedroom mirror that morning in 1991, I didn’t know which was worse—the way I felt or the way I looked.
In a sense they were one and the same, each a reflection of the other. I had just undergone a punishing round of chemotherapy following a double mastectomy for breast cancer, and doctors had warned me that I would probably have to undergo a second round.
I looked decades older than my 33 years. My skin sagged and my face was ashen. Dark circles shadowed my sunken eyes.

One Potato, Two Potato
Monday, November 10th, 2008Just after relocating to a new town, my father was let go from his job as a welder.
Dad diligently searched for work, and Mom tried to scrape together meals for my brother, sister and me.
Soon my parents had spent all their savings. When things got desperate, a nearby farmer offered us potatoes from his field. We ate potatoes three times a day: fried for breakfast, baked for lunch and mashed for dinner.
Several weeks passed and Dad was still unemployed. Mealtimes grew quiet and morose.
Kicked the Habit
Monday, November 10th, 2008
Accompanied by my four-year-old son, Eric, I was on my way to the store to buy a pack of cigarettes.
I knew I shouldn’t be doing this. I was going through a rough time financially and could barely make ends meet, especially for bad habits such as cigarette smoking.
Still, I’d been a smoker for 13 years and could not stop.
As I drove into the store’s parking lot, on impulse I turned to my son and blurted out, "Oh, Eric, do something to make me quit smoking!"

This Is a Precious Thing
Monday, November 10th, 2008Grandma Butter was our next-door neighbor. The immigrant widow of a Polish baker, she had come to California because of the warm climate, because her ailing brother lived there, and probably, to be frank, because there was nowhere else for her to go. She lived in a Quonset hut next door to our Quonset hut, near the hospital where my doctor husband was doing his residency. But these were temporary lodgings for us, and I didn't see any need to become Grandma Butter's great friend.
A Perfect Match
Wednesday, October 29th, 2008I put up my new 1994 calendar in the kitchen, feeling like I'd finally gotten my life back on track. The past year since my divorce had been a long, hard struggle, but my three boys and I had adjusted to our single-mom household.
My job at a furniture factory kept food on the table and paid the bills. And I'd started going to church again with my mom. I couldn't quite believe as she did that God had a deep, personal interest in our lives—I figured he had more important things to worry about than me—but I definitely found comfort in being closer to him.
Trouble at the Inn
Monday, October 27th, 2008!–paging_filter–pFor years now, whenever Christmas pageants are talked about in a certain little town in the Midwest, someone is sure to mention the name of Wallace Purling. /p
pWally’s performance in one annual production of the Nativity play has slipped into the realm of legend. But the old-timers who were in the audience that night never tire of recalling exactly what happened./p

It Takes a Stand
Friday, October 24th, 2008"Mom," my four-year-old daughter, Alex, said on that gray and unpromising January afternoon, "I want to build a lemonade stand."
Alex and I were on the stem cell transplant ward of the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut. As I stood looking out the window at the frozen landscape, I was trying to imagine how all of those bare hopeless trees would look again covered with green.
